Myths and Stories in Art
I'm taking more of an interest in narrative in art so I went onto the Getty's website and just browsed all of their paintings in their permanent collection that fall under the category of "myths and stories." These are some of my favorites.
They're prrrrretty dramatic. I like the old Flemish one the best.
Paul Gauguin - Arii Matamoe - 1892
Pierre-Paul Prud'hon - Justice and Divine Vengeance Pursuing Crime - 1805-06
Alessandro Magnasco - The Triumph of Venus - 1720-30
Francesco Solimena - Death of Messalina - c. 1708
Nikolaus Knupfer - Solon before Croesus - 1650-52
Landscape with Mercury and Argus - Unknown Flemish Artist - 1570s

Helen Frankenthaler
I've always loved Frankenthaler's smooth and melodic paintings and I recently saw one at the Phoenix Art Museum and my forgotten love was rekindled - to put it dramatically haha.

Abbott Thayer
Well I'm not partial to the subject matter but I think there's something that can be learned from his use of the brush - it's very energetic and expressive.

Sarah Cain
The juxtaposition of all the different materials and how they all work together creates a vibrant and imaginative painting.
